In May 1, 2005 BFD is celebrating his 15th
anniversary in promoting socially-engaged Buddhism in Cambodia.
This picture was taken 15 years ago marking the establishment of
Buddhism for Development in Site II Refugee Camp. We were listening
to our Spiritual Master, Venerable Preah Maha Vimaladhamma, on how
Buddhism can contribute to the development of Khmer Society. Since
then we have been learning and working to promote reconciliation,
peace, and development in the refugee camps, in the war zones, in
the remote areas, and various towns throughout the country.
After 15 years the socially-engaged Buddhist
concepts and practices are well accepted among the 4,000 monasteries
as well as the Governmental Organization, Non-Governmental and
International Organizations and the ordinary people that the
contribution of Buddhism and Buddhism for Development is vital and
imperative to peace and development in Cambodia.
With our vision for Cambodia to be an educated, democratic society
free from poverty and preventable illnesses, law abiding and
respectful of human rights and the environment and a moral society
with respect for Buddhism and Cambodian culture and traditions
whilst being aware of the threats and opportunities presented by
globalization BFD will continue and extend our
commitment to become a driving force for peace and development in
the region as well as in the world.
We are currently focusing our works in the northwest
of Cambodia including Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Oddor
Meanchey, Siemreap, Kampong Thom, and Preah Vihear Province. Our
Strategic Aim on social development is to raise the knowledge and
awareness of BFD target groups regarding local governance, civil
society and rule of law, human rights, role of women in society, and
Cambodian culture & traditions.
Our Strategic
Aim on Health Improvement is to increase knowledge and awareness on
health issues especially HIV/AIDS, and other preventable diseases.
Our Strategic
Aim on education opportunity is to reducing the rate of illiteracy,
providing education facilities, and opening opportunity for children
to go to and continue their school until the end of High School.
Our Strategic Aim on economic development is to
introducing small scale savings and credit schemes, income
generation projects, and providing advice, information, and
assistance for small businesses.
BFD will develop its 2nd Strategic Plan
(2006-2010) in the second semester of this year. This Strategic
Plan will enable us to look at more opportunities towards the future
and adapt itself to the best in achieving its vision.
From working
step-by-step towards self-reliance we are now working towards a
Dhammocratic Society. We expect to get support and collaboration to
make this vision achieved from those who are responsible in making
Cambodia a better place to live and the world that is more
sustainable for everyone.
Yours in Dharma
